Solution: Pyramid Schemes

Solvers are given a standard-looking criss-cross grid, a list of words to fit in it, and a triangular diagram of dots pointing to more dots. One odd feature is that at the bottom corners of the grid appear to be connected to two more copies of the grid, one to the right and one to the left. We’ll figure out what’s up with that later.

The grid has one given letter (a C, indicated with an arrow), and it’s possible to solve the grid uniquely starting from that C. While solving the grid, solvers might notice that it’s impossible to make progress without using information derived from the C. Without the C, every single entry can be filled in multiple ways, and “locally” this always works. For example, the horizontal word in the bottom row could be TREMBLED (bordered by SET then LID) or DAYLIGHT (bordered by LID then SET). This suggests that with different givens, there might be a different answer.

Indeed, that’s what’s going on with the additional copies: the letters from each grid feed into the two below it, and those grids can be solved uniquely from those givens. The grids then form an infinite pyramid, like in the diagram: each copy’s bottom two answers feed into the grids below it, and each grid solves uniquely from the givens it gets from its parents.

The numbered squares in the solution to the original grid read FIFTH LAYER. So the next thing to do is work downward to produce the fifth layer of the pyramid. Of the fifteen grids in the first five layers, eight are repeats, so solvers must complete seven versions of the grid. Some parts of these seven solutions can be skipped, as described below. (One could continue past the fifth layer, and indeed the pyramid can be extended infinitely, but no new versions appear after row five.)

Using this table, it’s possible to construct as much of the pyramid as desired. In the fifth layer, read the marked squares (the ones indicated by the arrows) to get an appropriately triangular answer: DELTA.

Logical process

There are seven solutions to the criss-cross, but not every word can be placed in every space of its length. Here’s an annotated version of the grid and word bank, and some commentary on the logic.

These ten words form a “bridge” between the left and right parts of the grid. The five pairs of words can be placed in exactly two ways, and their placement only depends on whether the bridge starts with L or S. Since these words don’t affect the rest of the grid at all, we can ignore them until we know whether that letter is an L or S. (In fact, you can ignore them entirely in later copies of the grid, since the resolution of the bridge doesn’t contribute to the extraction square!)

How do you know these words go there? Well, the 2- and 3-letter words don’t fit anywhere else. DEER/DYER is the only pair of 4-letter words that start with the same letter. LEGIONARY and SOLITAIRE are the only 9-letter words you can place to form LE or SY. (SVENGALIS can’t give the S, because it doesn’t match the R of DEER/DYER.) And finally, DAYLIGHT and TREMBLED are the only 8-letter words that can fit between the D and T of LID and SET, and the only words that can cross LEGIONARY or SOLITAIRE at the G or L.

One of the four six-letter words serves as an “input” into the left part of the grid. In other words, if there’s a given letter from the left-parent, it determines the upper-left 6-letter word. The other three can be placed once the left input word is determined. Specifically, the word which starts with the same letter as the left input word goes on the far right. The other two (which start with the same letter as each other) go in the middle-right. The penultimate “R” always points down to match DEER/DYER, while the penultimate “E” always points right. The two 5-letter I-words are also forced once the left input is known. Aside from the left input word, the other five do not contribute to the logic that determines the extraction square, so they can be skipped in later copies of the grid.

The remaining 9-letter words mostly serve to propogate information down from the top of the grid (which is usually determined by the inputs). Three of these are placed according to their starting letters, and the fourth goes in the bottom of the grid. The last letter of the fourth word determines the start of the red chain discussed above. These words also significantly constrain which 6- and 8-letter words can go up top. This is helpful in the grids where you’re missing a given on the left or right.

Two of these three words serve as the “inputs” to the next row of the pyramid, while the third determines the dark blue group below. You can place these uniquely once you know the crossing information from the yellow and green words.

These three words can be placed in a chain in one of three different orders. Once the upper cyan word is placed, there’s only one way to resolve the cycle.

The remaining seven 8-letter words form a cycle, where the penultimate letter of one word is equal to the third letter of the next. In the original grid, this chain is the first thing you identify, working backwards from the C. In later grids, it’s usually the last step! One word is used at the top of the grid. Often this one can be determined immediately, if there’s a given letter on the right side. Another of these words goes on the left, but the blue group only gives us the first letter (A, S, or P), and there are two words that start with that letter! In order to fill the middle of the grid, we need the other five words to form an unbroken chain. This tells us which of the two possibilities to put on the left. Only one choice will leave a chain of five. (Specifically, the word on the left should be “adjacent” to the upper-right word in this cyclic order.) Finally, the extraction letter comes at the end of the chain of five.

Author’s Notes

I’ve always found “infinite” puzzles cool, and this is my first time attempt at writing one. This particular construction was inspired by The World's Tallest Cryptic and Curious Customs, both by Kevin Wald. This puzzle was originally intended for the math department, under the title “Pascal’s Triangle”, with a nine-letter answer. It turns out you can extend this idea to a 9-letter answer, but it’s a mess—the word bank needed 40 words just for the meta-logic (that is, getting the correct inputs to propagate to the next layer), and that was before I added words for extraction and connectivity. By contrast, the final version of the puzzle uses just 16 words for meta-logic, and 8 more words to fit in the extraction. The remaining 12 are only there to connect the various pieces of the grid.
